If you’re not typically green-fingered but want plants around your house, keep on reading. It comes with no doubt that most house plants are not entirely notoriously hard to grow. Does that stop us amateur plant enthusiasts from ending up with a plant graveyard instead of a beautiful set of thriving plants? Nope. So, we present to you a list of almost indestructible and ‘unkillable’ indoor plants for you to indulge in.
Cactus
Now, we all know cactus plants are not only a popular choice for adding a bit of desert touch to interior spaces, but they are quite probably the most resilient plants. While they came in various shapes, sizes and colours, they all preferably thrive in bright and indirect sunny spots in the house.
Cacti need water sparingly but require a good draining soil to prevent rotting. Other than that, indoor cacti are stunning additions to shelves, windowsills or desks – whether in a lovely succulent arrangement or terrarium, they add lovely texture and visual interest to the display. Do keep in mind that with indoor cacti, their spines can be sharp… so be cautious when handling them and consider placing them out of reach of pets and children.
Spider plant
Spider plants may sound scary but they’re visually just quite fluffy (in my opinion). Known for their long arching leaves (thus the resemblance to spider legs) that are typically green with white stripes, they’re definitely a preferred choice due to their ease of care. While they thrive in bright and indirect sunlight, they are also able to tolerate lower light conditions.
While they can be entirely forgiving of the occasional missed watering, they should be watered thoroughly when the soil feels dry. Spider plants are known to produce little “offsets” or “spiderettes”, which can be easily propagated to grow new plants. Not only do they offer stunning visuals as their cascading foliage hangs beautifully from hanging baskets or pots, they are also known for their air-purifying qualities which makes them a popular choice for indoor plants.
Devil’s Ivy
Devil’s Ivy plants are definitely the most popular houseplants adored for their spirally and attractive foliage and their ease of care. They have heart-shaped leaves that are typically glossy and variegated with shades of green, yellow, or white and usually have vines that can grow quite long making stunning trails or a ‘climbing plant’. They’re known to be resilient and excellent for a variety of indoor conditions.
The Devil’s Ivy prefers bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low light conditions which is a win for gloomy old winter in England. Great for offices or rooms with limited natural light, you’ll only need to water them when the soil feels dry. They are also incredibly easy to propagate making it a favourite for plant enthusiasts. Devil’s Ivy is also known for its air-purifying qualities and can be used in so many ways to enhance indoor spaces. Whether as a standalone plant on a shelf or table or as hanging planters, they’re most definitely a lush choice for green walls and anyone looking for a fuss-free houseplant.
Money plant
Chinese Money Plants are one for lovers of feng shui. Characterised by their unique round, coin-shaped bright green leaves, the plant’s foliage often gives a modern and playful aesthetic making it a favourite for contemporary indoor spaces. Suitable for beginner plant enthusiasts, they prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions.
It’s paramount to keep them away from direct sunlight as it’ll harm the leaves and water when the soil feels dry. Money Plants are also prolific propagators of offshoots or “pups” which makes them an excellent choice for sharing with friends or expanding your plant collection. In terms of symbolism, they are believed to bring good luck and prosperity and positive energy to a household according to Feng Shui principles. Money plants additionally have air-purifying qualities and are low-maintenance making them a charming choice for easy-to-care plants.
Snake plant
Snake Plants are known for their striking appearance and easy maintenance. Having tall, upright leaves that grow in a rosette pattern, their leaves are often thick have a variety of patterns. They are prized for their resilience and ability to thrive in low-light conditions. They can tolerate a wide range of light conditions from bright indirect light to low light, making them ideal for offices or rooms with limited natural light.
An excellent choice for improving indoor air quality. the snake plant can also be easily propagated through division or leaf cuttings. Indoor snake plants are versatile, stylish, and easy-to-care-for houseplants that not only add a touch of greenery and elegance to any indoor space but make for top-notch additions to homes and offices.
