The Berkeley Beach Huts are taking us to the English Riviera this summer.
Beachy getaways will be possible for households and individuals from April 12, if England’s roadmap out of lockdown proceeds as planned. But for the rest of us who are itching to hit the seaside, there’ll be just as enticing an option a little closer to home. The Berkeley hotel in Belgravia will be transforming their outdoor space into The Berkeley Beach Huts, an array of cute seaside huts that offer a memorable outdoor dining experience. They’ve been inspired by the seafronts of charming seaside towns such as Whitstable and Southwold, and pay homage to great British staycations that are going to be extremely en vogue this summer. Opening in line with the relaxed restrictions on outdoor dining on April 12, they promise “irresistible seafood, seaside fare and retro classics”; in short, everything we’re dreaming of right now.
They’ve got previous with these holiday-inspired pop-ups; who can forget the hotel’s Amalfi Coast-inspired setup from 2019? This year’s menu will go heavy on seafood, with whole grilled lobsters, freshly-shucked oysters, baskets of crisp scampi, and even octopus to dip into. But perhaps most excitingly, The Berkeley are promising “gourmet 99s”, in an homage to the ubiquitous Mr Whippy cones you’ll see on any self-respecting British seafront.
The Berkeley Beach Huts are bookable for up to six people (who can be from different households under the Rule of Six, which also returns on April 12), but there’s one item of small print you’ll want to know before you dive in. There’s a required minimum spend of £500 on food and drinks for the beach hut, excluding the service charge: around £83 per person if you’re a party of six. Perhaps it’s the big fancy meal you’d planned to celebrate reuniting with friends?
Happily, terrace and countertop dining will also be available, and the beach hut menu extends to all of The Berkeley’s outdoor dining spaces, so we can all pop along for a true taste of the British seaside!
