Got the blues? Maybe avoid The Apple Blue for the time being then…
Well, in late 2020, we’ve all most likely got a touch of the blues. Still, one Balham cafe is steering gleefully into it, with a decor and a menu that takes heavy inspiration from azure tones. The Apple Blue is a patisserie and cafe which loves brunch, sweet treats, and coffee – but really, there’s nothing they love more than shades of blue, as you can quite obviously see… [Featured image: @applebluepatisserie]

Tables, walls, and crockery all flaunt this obsession proudly, but if you think The Apple Blue stops at the decor, you’d be quite wrong. Witness their Iced Apple Blue Latte, made with oat milk and yet retaining the distinct flavour of apple:
A regular latte is equally vibrant, but one dish nips in to steal the limelight here, and you’ll find it on the brunch menu.
Yup, that’s French toast, but quite unlike you’ve ever had it before. Gorgeously caramelised brioche French toast is topped with peanut butter, burnt caramel crumble, caramel apples, and maple syrup. The coup de grâce, though, is that electric blue ice cream – no points for correctly assuming it’s apple flavoured – which is bound to zhush up any brunch aficionado’s Instagram feed. The Apple Blue’s signature dish is honestly quite unlike anything else you’ll find within the city limits…
There are, however, plenty of other reasons to make a pilgrimage down to Balham. The Apple Blue proudly proclaim to love food “in all its magnificent glory”, and when you cast an admiring glance over their menu, that becomes readily apparent. Vying for attention with the French toast on the brunch menu are the likes of kedgeree, shakshuka, shawarma and tabbouleh, and a Dutch Baby (looks like a Yorkshire pudding, tastes like a pancake) with fried chicken.
Meanwhile, the cafe’s range of cakes and sweet treats will surely prove irresistible even as you waddle towards the exit. Like you’re going to say no to a salted milk chocolate cookie with Nutella, Oreo and peanut butter brownie, Matcha chocolate choux cupcake, or a slice of their rotating cast of droolworthy cakes.
Apples may be the forbidden fruit, but when it looks and tastes this good, you know you’ve got to give into temptation!
