There are plenty of reasons to look forward to the month of March. The days start getting longer, the weather starts getting warmer, it starts becoming socially acceptable to eat Easter eggs for breakfast. But I’m about to add something else to the lengthy list of things to look forward to next month. And that, my friends, is the one-night-only performance that will see two BAFTA award-winning actors take to a London stage to read the very piece of work that launched the career of a BAFTA award-winning writer.
One Night Only with Ben Whishaw and Aimee Lou Wood
The one-night-only performance will take place at The Cinema at the Power Station in Battersea, and will shine a spotlight on the power of debut plays. Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education, White Lotus) and Ben Whishaw (Black Doves, This is Going to Hurt) will join forces for a script-in-hand reading of Dennis Kelly’s debut play, Debris. And the reading will be followed by a Q&A with the cast and special guests about the huge importance of new writing for theatre.
The event will fundraise for Theatre503 (the UK’s only theatre entirely dedicated to debut plays); the very spot in which the play in question premiered over twenty years ago. Debris is the debut work of Dennis Kelly (the brains behind the likes of Utopia and Matilda the Musical), and is a ‘funny, dark and gruesome journey through disturbed minds’. All proceeds from the event will go directly towards supporting Theatre503’s vital work with debut playwrights.

Anthony Simpson-Pike (artistic director and co-CEO of Theatre503) and Emily Carewe (executive director and co-CEO of Theatre503) said: “Theatre503 is a launchpad for the UK’s most exciting writing talent – a place where bold new voices begin.
“We’re proud to return to Dennis Kelly’s Debris for this special even celebrating the power of a debut play, and thrilled to welcome the brilliant Ben and Aimee. This event is both a celebration of our past and a rallying cry for what comes next – a future made possible by the vital support from those who believe in our small but mighty theatre.”
One Night Only with Ben Whishaw and Aimee Lou Wood will take place at The Cinema at the Power Station on Wednesday, March 4. Priority booking is open now and tickets go on general sale at 10am on Wednesday, February 11. Find out more here.
