Independentemente da estação do ano, do tempo ou da situação, qualquer altura é perfeita para se sentar ao balcão com uma cerveja e um pacote de salsichas de porco. Não há uma resposta definitiva para a questão de qual deles é realmente o mais antigo – a única coisa que todos podem concordar é que Charles Dickens frequentava praticamente todos eles. Nós somos da opinião que isso não importa muito, desde que tenham uma história interessante para contar… Aqui estão treze dos pubs mais antigos de Londres onde deve beber uma cerveja. 1. The Guinea, Mayfair
Data de 1720
Embora o edifício em si só remonte a 1720, existe uma estalagem neste local desde 1423, o que garante ao The Guinea um lugar nesta lista. Em tempos mais recentes, tornou-se famoso pelos bifes servidos no The Guinea Grill. No entanto, estes bifes custam um pouco mais caro, por isso talvez seja melhor guardar o lombo para a próxima vez? Também têm tartes premiadas para saciar a sua fome, por isso, achamos que está tudo bem.

2. The Spaniards Inn, Hampstead
Data de 1585
Bebe aqui e estarás a seguir as pisadas de figuras literárias como Keats, Byron e Dickens (nós avisámos-te que ele andava por aí!). Também ganhou notoriedade por ser o suposto local de nascimento e o local preferido do salteador Dick Turpin. Os seus menus sazonais são um sucesso, e vale a pena visitar o Tap Takeover do pub, uma vez que fazem uma rotação de uma seleção de excelentes cervejas artesanais ao longo do ano.

3. Hoop & Grapes, Aldgate
Data de 1593
Não deve ser confundido com um pub de nome idêntico e ligeiramente mais jovem em Farringdon, este estabelecimento é um dos poucos edifícios de madeira que sobreviveram ao Grande Incêndio de 1666. Segundo consta, as chamas pararam a apenas cinquenta metros da porta, o que achamos que pode ter sido uma pequena intervenção divina. Esperamos que a sua cerveja seja divinal! Mas fica de olho na mesa, pois diz-se que ao longo dos anos o pub se inclinou para o lado cerca de 30 cm…

4. Cordeiro e bandeira, Covent Garden
Data de 1772
Um dos locais mais pequenos desta lista, o Lamb & Flag também pode reivindicar uma das histórias mais sangrentas. O poeta John Dryden quase foi assassinado neste local (embora cem anos antes de ter sido construído, em 1772) e, no século XIX, as lutas regulares com os dedos nus no beco valeram-lhe um nome alternativo: “O Balde de Sangue”. Felizmente, as coisas acalmaram desde então.

5. Cidade de Yorke, Holborn
Data de 1430
Ok, então o prédio atual é uma réplica construída em 1920, mas um pub está de pé aqui há quase seiscentos anos, então ainda é um dos pubs mais antigos de Londres. A cervejaria Samuel Smith é a proprietária e a responsável por este local, por isso não terá tanta variedade aqui. Dito isto, os preços mais baixos compensam-no, e a cerveja Taddy é um sucesso de público. Além disso, é um lugar absolutamente cavernoso, perfeito para grupos ou para aqueles que gostam de se perder no meio da multidão!

6. The Old Bell Tavern, Fleet Street
Data de 1678
Nenhum outro pub desta lista se pode gabar de ter um arquiteto tão impressionante como o The Old Bell,que foi construído por Sir Christopher Wren para os seus pedreiros, que estavam a reconstruir a Igreja de St Bride’s depois daquele incómodo Grande Incêndio. Nem sequer é o único pub que se diz que ele construiu, pois o vizinho Ye Olde Watling (gerido pela mesma cadeia) também tem um lugar no seu portefólio.

7. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street
Data de 1667
Ganhando facilmente o prémio de pub com o melhor nome desta lista, o Ye Olde Cheshire Che ese não é o lugar para ir se quiser sentar-se junto a uma janela e ver o mundo passar. É mais adequado para se imaginar como protagonista de um thriller criminal vitoriano, com serradura no chão e baías de madeira com bancos de igreja de encosto alto. Queremos a nossa cerveja com um lado de assassínio e intriga, por favor. Parece mesmo um dos pubs mais antigos de Londres. O pub original foi destruído no Grande Incêndio de Londres, mas não demorou muito para que um sucessor surgisse das cinzas (prioridades, pessoal!). Para além disso, que tal um pouco de pedigree, embora o pub date de 1667, isso deve-se ao facto de ter sido reconstruído em 1667. De facto, já existia um bar no local desde 1538!
Certifique-se apenas de que não se dirige acidentalmente para o não muito distante, com o mesmo nome, The Cheshire Cheese. É muito mais novo, datando apenas do século XX – uma verdadeira criança em comparação!

8. Ye Olde Mitre, Holborn
Data de 1546
Uma questão de terra significava que este pub era tecnicamente parte de Cambridgeshire até o início do século XX, então Ye Olde Mitre faz uma reivindicação um pouco duvidosa de ser o mais antigo de Londres. Ainda assim, diz-se que Elizabeth I dançou em volta da cerejeira que ficava do lado de fora, então por que não imitá-la e fazer um boogie com sua cerveja de escolha?

9. O Prospeto de Whitby, Wapping
Data de 1520
O pub ribeirinho mais antigo de Londres oferece vistas encantadoras do Tamisa – temos a certeza de que era isso que costumava atrair os marinheiros e contrabandistas para o pub outrora conhecido como “The Devil’s Tavern”. Está de pé desde 1520, e uma lembrança do seu passado sombrio pode ser vista com o laço e a forca pendurados na varanda.

Data de 1602

11. The George Inn, London Bridge
Data de 1583
Tendo ficado de uma forma ou de outra desde 1583, a última pousada com galerias de Londres recebeu inúmeros rostos famosos. Shakespeare era um hóspede frequente, e as suas peças foram representadas no pátio durante anos. Que tal esta prova de que se trata de um dos pubs mais antigos de Londres?
O pátio continua a ser uma das maiores atracções do pub, pois pode beber G&Ts à sombra do The Shard. Também é notável por ser a única estalagem com galerias de Londres que sobreviveu e é propriedade do National Trust. Data de 1550
Sem surpresa, este pub recebe o nome do famoso navio, que atracou ao lado antes de navegar para o Novo Mundo. Se conseguir provar uma ligação familiar a um dos viajantes, porque não assinar o livro de Descendentes do Mayflower? Eles também afirmam servir o melhor peixe e batatas fritas de Londres, mas isso é definitivamente uma discussão para outra altura.

13. The Grapes, Limehouse
Data de 1583
Dickens faz outra aparição aqui, já que The Grapes é supostamente o pub descrito na abertura de Our Mutual Friend. É outro dos nossos pubs mais antigos com uma história sombria, já que estivadores desagradáveis teriam afogado clientes bêbados no Tamisa – algo que o atual proprietário, o ator Ian McKellen, optou por encobrir em sua história do lugar. Segunda-feira é o dia para visitar, já que o ator é conhecido por fazer o quiz do pub de vez em quando!

14. The Jamaica Wine House, Cidade de Londres
Data de 1652 (mais ou menos…)
A Jamaica Wine House não é tão antiga como muitas outras inclusões nesta lista. No entanto, tem um papel importante na história de Londres; é indiscutivelmente a fonte da cultura do café de Londres. Café? Vinho? Cerveja? Que sítio é este?! O Jamaica Wine House foi um dos primeiros locais em Londres a importar e servir café. Posteriormente, um pub ocupou o local no final de 1800, mantendo o nome. Ao longo dos anos, a história tem sido marcada por acontecimentos bastante sinistros; o local está cheio de histórias e mitos.
Ah, e apesar do nome, é certamente um pub maravilhoso e acolhedor. Embora com um bar de vinhos na cave… E café… Oh, ok, talvez sejam as três coisas afinal!
