The team at Covent Garden restaurant LUCi spent National Tiramisu Day (March 21) constructing what was to become the World’s Tallest Tiramisu Tower. Taking the cakey, creamy, caffeinated dessert to new heights, the Guinness World Record-breaking tiramisu tower ultimately measured in at two metres tall – taller than a taller-than-average man.
Affectionately named ‘Torremisu’ (that’s ‘torre’ meaning tower) by LUCi’s staff, the giant dessert uses all the classic ingredients and is entirely edible. Not that you’d want to eat it after it’s been on display for days, but that’s besides the point. Torremisu took five hours to build, but a full 24 hours to prep all the ingredients. They froze the bottom layer too, just to make sure it would reach the bottom of the mould in one piece and serve as a solid base for the rest of the pudding.
Since the spectacle has proven so popular, the team will be working on a replica tower overnight tonight (March 27). The hope is it will then be on display until Easter Monday, but there’ll also be a life-sized cut out of the original to pose with. What’s more, guests who pop in to see it can scan a QR code and quote ‘tiramisu’ to claim a free tiramisu when dining at LUCi on or before April 1 (no, you’re not being fooled).
LUCi oozes with Milanese charm, boasting a grand, 18-metre long counter on the ground floor offering gorgeous Italian bakes to eat in or takeaway. There’s fresh bread and pastries in the morning, and focaccia, ciabatta and pizza by the slice from noon. Upstairs you’ll find a stunning restaurant setting, with plenty of Italian classics and, of course, their signature tiramisu.
