Victoria Park is set to host a so-called super screening of the World Cup final on Sunday (August 20) where England will go head to head with Spain. The final will be sure to have the entire nation at the edge of their seats as it’s England’s first World Cup final since 1966 where England won 4-2 against West Germany.
England secured their place in the final after a nail-biting semi-final against Australia on Wednesday (August 16) and scoring a beautiful 3-1 against the Aussies. Goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo have brought England one game away from glory.
The Greater London Authority said they were unable to host the screening in Trafalgar Square, where thousands have previously flocked to watch England in the Euros, due to essential maintenance work being carried out. They are instead promoting a screening run by the All Points East Festival taking place in Victoria Park in East London for a super screening worthy of the epic final set to come.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, has expressed his excitement for England’s final and for the screenings all around London saying that the screening in Victoria Park will “bring thousands of fans together to roar on the team in their biggest game yet”.
“The Lionesses’s run to the final-and hopefully to bring the World Cup home-will deliver a further massive boost to the popularity of women’s football in this country and inspire more girls and women to get involved in sport,” he added. “The atmosphere for the screening on Sunday will be electric and I can’t wait to see Londoners come together at Victoria Park and at the many fantastic venues, bars and restaurants across London showing the final to cheer the team on to glory.”
City Hall has said that upon the victory of the Lionesses on Sunday, a ceremony in London will be expected to take place.
The Women’s World Cup 2023 final will take place on Sunday, August 20 at 11 am. For those of you unable to make the Victoria Park screening or any other in the city, you will be able to watch it on both BBC One and ITV1.
