The internet’s harshest fried rice critic has put his money where his mouth is. Transitioning from brutal YouTube roasts to the high-stakes reality of the hospitality industry, the wildly popular online personality with 5 million followers is now serving real plates in the capital.
Nigel Ng, the comedian behind the viral alter ego Uncle Roger, has launched his first physical restaurant in London. Located in Chinatown, the new venue brings his signature comedic flair and Malaysian heritage directly to diners.
Inside Kawan
Named after the Malay word for “friend”, Kawan immediately establishes a distinct visual tone.
Funny personal touches are woven throughout the decor in the multi-level space. There is also a dedicated photo wall highlighting the creator’s favourite online milestones. Among the curated snapshots sits a framed picture of him alongside Gordon Ramsay.
MSG Baos and Lollipop Wellingtons
Down in the basement kitchen, which Ng jokingly refers to as his “creepy dungeon”, head chef Daren Liew commands a tight, highly skilled operation. Playfully compared to a “Chinese Uncle Guga”, Chef Daren oversees a menu that merges classic Asian staples with British formats.
Dishes draw heavily from Malaysian influences, featuring dishes like rich dry wagyu curry and savoury rumah wings. Fluffy baos arrive at the table stamped with custom “MSG” lettering across their tops.
Naturally, egg fried rice takes a central role on the menu, stepping up to the very standards the comedian uses to roast online cooks. The Asian Chicken Wellington is engineered to be eaten right off the bone like a lollipop and is served with a pour-over chicken jus.
Ng boldly claims this poultry variation outshines Ramsay’s famous beef version. Diners can pair the bold flavours with a custom house beer, which features a charming label illustrated by an operator’s daughter.
