If you love having a gander around the City of London, then chances are you’ve explored the Barbican area. Nestled on the edges of what was formerly Roman Londinium, explore remnants of the old London Wall right next to London’s most iconic brutalist structure, perfectly encompassing London’s instantly recognisable spirit by blending the old with the new. From historic pubs and delicious dining to some well-needed culture at the Barbican Centre, we’re about to break down all the fabulous things to do in this all-encompassing guide.
Whether you’re visiting for the art scene or are just a local looking to take your love for the area to the next level, we’re truly spoilt for choice with something for everyone, including history buffs, theatre-goers, foodies, and beyond. So without further ado, here are the best things to do in the Barbican area for your consideration:
1. Explore the Barbican Estate
Famed for its confusing layout, striking architecture, and tranquil beauty, the Barbican Estate is home to residential housing and one of Europe’s largest performing arts centres. This architectural marvel hosts a diverse range of events in the Barbican Centre, some of which we will touch on in this round-up, such as theatre, art exhibitions, concerts, and more. However, exploring the grounds is equally worth your time, with the estate boasting gorgeous water gardens, satisfying symmetry in its design, and picture-perfect scenes for the ‘gram.
Construction for the estate began in 1965 and it took 11 years to complete the brutalist masterpiece. It’s become a symbol of post-war Britain, with architects Powell and Bon, as well as Chamberlin, being pioneers in the style and architecture at large during that time. The estate was notoriously Grade II-listed in September 2001 and continues to inspire architect nerds and design connoisseurs alike. Queen Elizabeth II even declared it to be a ‘one of the modern wonders of the world’.

2. Check out the fab art exhibitions at the Barbican
Hidden within the brutalist maze that is the Barbican, lies a couple of must-visit cultural gems including some fabulous art spaces. Firstly, the Barbican Art Gallery is where contemporary creativity collides with daring innovation, presenting a varied mix of unmissable exhibitions exploring a variety of themes and topics. Known for pushing boundaries and challenging perspectives, all art lovers in London should keep their eyes on the Barbican for their next artsy venture.
Just around the corner from the art gallery, tucked away like a secret waiting to be discovered, is the Curve Gallery. This unique, sinuous space showcases immersive installations from international artists. Best of all, exhibitions are usually free at the Curve, making it a great option if you’re looking after the pounds and the pennies. Find out what art exhibitions are on display/on their way by visiting their website.

3. Witness an indoor rainforest at this gorgeous conservatory
Step inside the Barbican Conservatory, an unexpected urban oasis that almost feels worlds away from London. This glass-enclosed sanctuary is a verdant wonderland, home to over 2,000 species of plants, trees, and everything in between. Winding paths lead you through lush foliage and exotic blooms, with koi and carp gliding serenely in the ponds below. It’s one of our favourite hidden treasures in London, offering a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of life in the capital with a little slice of paradise. This beloved local hotspot is known for hosting exhibitions and events so watch this space, people!

4. Walk alongside the Old London Wall
Discover the remnants of the Roman fortifications with the London Wall Walk. This self-guided tour takes you through the history of Londinium and its ancient defences, offering an insightful glimpse into the city’s allusive past. There are even some rubbles and ruins in the Barbican Estate itself, but we highly recommend taking the elevated walking trail (St Alphage High Walk) for awesome viewpoints of the fantastically preserved wall, as well as venturing further into the City of London for even more Roman remains.

5. Get the pints in at one (or a couple) of the area’s best pubs
We have another offering that doesn’t directly involve the Barbican Estate, and of course, it’s the area’s best boozers. There’s a plethora of top-notch pubs at your disposal, and one of our absolute favourites is the Lamb and Trotter. This fantastic gastro-pub is great for getting the good times rolling, with an ever-evolving selection of craft beers, quintessential pub grub, and immaculate vibes.
Another go-to option is the Fox & Anchor, which is a more traditional offering with old-school decor and rustic, wooden details. Even the building’s exterior is something to behold, which seems to be a reoccurrence in Barbican. If you fancy a couple more to make it a well-earned pub crawl, we also recommend visiting the Jugged Hare and Old Red Crow.
Find the Lamb and Trotter at 6 Little Britain, EC1A 7BX, and the Fox & Anchor at 115 Charterhouse Street, Clerkenwell, EC1M 6AA.
6. Enjoy a couple of cocktails at Neo Barbican
Neo Barbican is a sophisticated bar that’s a stone’s throw away from the tube station. This stylish watering hole is popular for big celebrations, offering a carefully-curated selection of crafty cocktails, fine wines, and artisanal spirits. Its swish vibes and romantically dark atmosphere makes it great for date night, with the space boasting ambient lighting and chic decor. You have to try one of their cocktails as they are, quite simply, divine.

7. Catch a theatre show, concert, or live event at the Barbican
It’s time to head back to the area’s focal point, and although we’ve already mentioned that the Barbican Centre is an essential hotbed for the arts here in London, it certainly doesn’t stop at exhibitions and installations. From the best theatre productions and live music to insightful talks and other forms of entertainment, there is so much going on that it can be difficult keeping up. 9. Visit the medieval St. Giles’ Cripplegate church
There’s a lot of surprises nestled in and around the estate, like as we mentioned previously, you can discover old ruins of Roman London. However, most are taken aback by the striking church nestled smack-bang in the centre. It may look like your standard church but it’s one of London’s medieval churches that survived both the Great Fire of London and the Blitz (although restoration work was needed). St. Giles’ Cripplegate has been a place of worship for several denominations of Christianity since its inception, offering a peaceful retreat that’s jam-packed with history, surrounded by the iconic brutalist structure. Be sure to check it out the next time you’re in the area.

10. Soak up some culture at the Guildhall
Only a short walk from the Barbican Estate, the Guildhall has been at the centre of city governance for over 800 years. It was originally built to reflect London’s power and its political influence, and has since become a centre of learning, playing host to an array of events, exhibitions, and tours. There’s a spectacular library and art gallery on site, which is home to an impressive art collection owned by the City of London. You can even visit the ruins of a Roman Amphitheatre under the building, solidifying this place as the oldest events venue in London officially.
📍 Find the Guildhall at 71 Basinghall St, London EC2V 7HH.
11. Wine and dine at the Barbican Estate
The Barbican Estate has intrinsically made this round-up a few times, so it’s only right we conclude with their deliciously drool-worthy food offerings. There are a handful of adored bars and restaurants on site, including their very-own Martini Bar, if you’re looking for a boozy way to kick-start your foodie adventure at the Barbican. The Barbican Kitchen and their Bar and Grill are great money-saving options, or opt for treating yourself to a fabulous French feast at their Brasserie.
