It’s officially the season for pub gardens and picky bits. And if you feel as though you’ve exhausted the abundance of al-fresco options that London has to offer (which is surely impossible, but you never know); we’ve uncovered an ever-so shiny summertime gem just outside of the capital city.
Now, I must say, it’s been a pretty great year for the spot in question. It reopened its doors after a rather hefty renovation, it rediscovered its long-lost historic guest book, and it was named the very best place to stay in the Southeast by The Times. Perched in the picturesque village of Fittleworth, The Swan Inn serves up everything you’d want from a summery staycation in spades – and it’ll only take you 90 minutes to get there from London.

Oozing history and charm in equal measure, The Swan Inn was built in the late 14th century – and certainly has some stories to tell. Having been famously frequented by an impressive roster of guests, the pub’s guest books are brimming with the scribbled signatures of some of the most illustrious artists and literary figures.
Long thought to be lost, the guest books were recently rediscovered, and during the pub’s renovation, its 12 beautiful bedrooms were named after 12 of its most venerable visitors. The likes of JM Barrie, John Constable, Rudyard Kipling, and Millicent Fawcett all have rooms named after them. And the rooms are certainly as magnificent as their namesakes, each filled with rustic and homely country-house charm and plenty of gorgeous and thoughtful touches.
Although spending the night at the stunning Swan Inn should be ever so high up on your list of things to do this summer; it’s also a perfect spot to spend the day. Whether you’ve been strolling through the Sussex countryside and are in need a pint and a pit-stop, or you fancy a long, lazy lunch in a sun-soaked pub garden; the lovingly restored country boozer is the place to be.
Their recently unveiled garden will make you think you’ve been transported straight to the Mediterranean, serving up woodfire pizzas, and a whole host of Italian-style picky bits. There’s also a boules court at the end of the garden, so once you’ve fueled up on delicious dishes, why not challenge your pals to a friendly game and let the good times roll boule?

The Swan Inn is approximately a ninety minute drive from London. There is no on-site car park but there is free street parking nearby. Non-drivers can hop on a direct train from London Victoria to Pulborough and then take a quick local bus from there.
