Today (May 8), the UK is marking VE Day with a set of celebrations around the city, and if there’s one spot that is certainly making a heightened level of noise about the fact, it’s the tallest building in the entire city.
That’s right – the Shard will commemorate VE Day by lighting up in the red, white, and blue colours of the Union Jack to remember those who served in the Second World War on the 80th anniversary of it coming to an end.

The Shard has, in fact, been marking the occasion in the nights leading up to VE Day through a display at the peak of their building at 9pm sharp with its top 20 storeys shining away in red, white, and blue. It comes alongside other landmarks paying tribute to VE Day, which include a display of lights on the London Eye, as well as celebrations and flyover taking place in London.
Once you’ve looked to the sky to see the display, you can then head over to one of London’s pubs, which will all be permitted to open for two hours longer than usual tonight, after Prime Minsiter Keir Starmer announced the boozers around the capital to serve pints until 1am for VE Day.
VE Day takes place today (May 8), and remembers those who served during World War II 80 years on from the day the conflict ended. Consider donating to a charity helping those still suffering the effects of any form of conflict or human rights crises today, such as War Child, Doctors Without Borders, Amnesty International or any others of your choosing.
