Five (and a bit) weeks of football fever is about to come to an exhilarating end. And ahead of England’s semi-final against Argentina, the London skyline has decided to get in on the action. The Shard will be illuminating its spiky spire tonight (July 14) with a huge St George’s Cross in honour of the Three Lions.
The iconic 310-metre structure (which happens to be the tallest building in the UK) will be radiating support for the England football team, who will be playing in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals against Argentina tomorrow night. The patriotic display will light up the top 20 storeys of the legendary London landmark; acting as big old beacon of encouragement.
The Shard’s lights use energy-efficient LED units which can be seen across the capital city and from up to 40 miles away. So, loyal Londoners (and beyond) will be able to feast their eyes on the red and white display that will remain shining in the sky throughout the game tomorrow.
If when England make it in to the final on Sunday, the Shard will continue flying the illuminated flag until then, rallying support for Thomas Tuchel’s trailblazing team. The Shard is no stranger to celebrating major national sporting occasion, having lit up similarly for previous events.
So, is it coming home? I’m not entirely sure. But it certainly is coming to the Shard.
