We Londoners are pretty simple creatures, really. Give us a nice, cold pint and something gorgeous to gawp at, and we’re happy. Well as happy as a grumpy Londoner can be, you know? And a spot that ticks those boxes in spades is The Roebuck. This wonderful watering hole has been perched proudly at the top of Richmond Hill since 1717, and offers – quite possibly – the best view in the entire city.
The Roebuck itself dates back to Georgian times, but a pub has occupied the very same site since Shakespeare’s days. The pub has been ‘perfected over generations’ but has always boasted an unparalleled 25-mile view across Petersham Meadows and the River Thames. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Windsor Castle.
You may recognise the view even if you’ve never set foot inside The Roebuck, as it’s a rather well-documented vista, and has been painted by world-famous artists including Jasper Francis Crospey, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and – of course – Turner.
Inside the Roebuck, you’ll find plenty of cosy corners, perfect for whiling away the hours. There’s a log fire, a private function room, a fantastic beer offering, and a decent menu full of pub grub classics. To truly soak up the sensational view, however, we’d recommend getting your pint to-go, taking it across the street, plonking yourself down on one of the public benches, and enjoying it from there. On particularly sunny days (remember those?), you might have to queue for a while. But, we promise you, it’ll be worth the wait.

📍 You’ll find The Roebuck at 130 Richmond Hill, TW10 6RN.
