In today’s episode of weird and wonderful watering holes in the capital we have The Vault 1894. Built into the base of London’s legendary Tower Bridge; this cosy, family-run boozer truly defines the phrase ‘hidden gem’. Located down a surreptitious staircase next to the bridge, The Vault 1894 offers one of the most unique drinking experiences in London. And in a city that boasts over 3,500 pubs; that’s a pretty impressive claim to fame – don’t you think?
Once you’ve managed to locate the nook in which The Vault 1894 is nestled; you’ll discover a pub that’s filled to the brim with character, charm, and some of the very best views in the city. The back wall is made entirely of windows, giving visitors a rare peek of the underneath of Tower Bridge. The pub also allows you to get incredibly close to the River Thames (the jury’s still out on whether or not that’s a good thing), and a simply spectacular view of the London city skyline.
The history of The Vault 1894
The history of The Vault 1894 isn’t particularly extensive. Unlike Tower Bridge itself (which was built in 1894), the pub’s past only dates back to 2006. The Vault 1894 was built by the City Freeman, who supposedly thought that the 10-minute walk between the last pub in the city and his home in Shad Thames was too outrageously long. So, he built the riverside pub to break up the journey. If you want something done, do it yourself, I suppose…
The pub walls are adorned with historic photos of Tower Bridge, illustrating the beloved bridge’s rich history. There are also seven ‘mind your head’ warnings dotted around the pub, as The Vault 1894 is built inside an arch of the bridge, and – in some sections – the ceiling is as low as 5 feet.

The Vault 1894 serves up a decent menu of classic pub grub, including a delicious plate of fish and chips. It also has its very own beer garden, which – once again – offers an incredible view of Tower Bridge. Perfect for locals and tourists alike, this Thameside tavern is hidden just out of site – but is well worth seeking out.
