I certainly make no secret of the fact that I’ve got a pretty sizeable soft spot for our big, bright, and (extremely) busy city. But sometimes, even the most devoted London-lovers need a little bit of respite from the chaos of the capital. So, if you happen to be on the lookout for a little slice of peace and tranquility (but don’t fancying venturing too far from home), please allow me to point you in the rather dreamy direction of Yarmouth. Because picture-perfectly perched on the very edge of this teeny-tiny town on the Isle of Wight, you’ll find The George; a historic and oh-so heavenly hotel that’ll have your worries melted away within mere moments of your arrival.
The George Hotel
Drenched in history and oozing character and charm; this waterside hotel has plenty of stories to tell. Dating back to the 17th century, the building was once home to the most notable of the Island’s Governers (Sir Robert Holmes), who frequently entertained King Charles II there. Nods to the building’s lengthy past are scattered throughout the space and the Grade II* listed site is sat proudly next to Yarmouth Castle. Pretty much every single building in this quaint coastal town looks like it’s jumped straight from the pages of a storybook. But we all know that it’s what’s on the inside that counts. And once you’ve stepped foot inside The George, you’re going to find it pretty darn difficult to leave, that’s for sure.

Boasting 17 gorgeously designed rooms, each filled to the brim with sumptuous serenity and understated luxury; The George offers all of the comforting amenities that you could want or need. There’s thoughtful touches at every turn, and the whole place simply exudes warmth and cosiness. The room I stayed in was so gorgeous, I didn’t really want to peel myself away from it. I’m ever so glad that I eventually did, though, because the restaurant and the huge garden terrace were certainly worth venturing downstairs for.
Boasting an atmosphere as delicious as the food itself, the conservatory restaurant offers a menu full of classic hearty grub and sweeping views across The Solent. The humongous beer garden will instantly have you feeling like you’ve been transported to the middle of the Mediterranean, and offers the perfect sun-trap for those hazy summer evenings.

If you do manage to peel yourself away from the outrageously comfy bed, the humongous bath tub, the roaring fire, and the scrumptious food offering; I’d highly recommend you having a mooch around the local shops (the Fox & Robin was my personal favourite but they were all cute as a button).
Getting to The George from London
Just a hop, skip, and a ferry ride from Hampshire, reaching The George was surprisingly quick and easy. Londoners can jump on a train down to Lymington Pier where they can then hop on a ferry that’ll take them directly to Yarmouth. The George Hotel is mere moments away from where the ferry drops you off, so it’s a far easier journey than I would have initially thought. If you’re feeling particularly bougie, you can even hire the George’s luxury private charter and arrive in true style.
