Takeaway pint, anyone?
As the UK heads towards another heatwave, there’s no better time to hunt down your first takeaway pint. It’s the new trend, after all, since pubs aren’t properly open. If you haven’t grabbed one yet, chances are someone you know has been indulging in the occasional after-work drink by the river. After all, we were denied of this simple pleasure for a few months.
But, with this new craze, comes the problem of waste. Many single-use plastic cups are being used to serve the pints. One campaign asks us to change this.
London saw the lowest levels of air pollution since the 1950s during the lockdown but, after this month, levels have crept back up to 80 per cent of what they were pre-lockdown. This campaign, #PlasticFreePints pleads Londoners to think about the planet as they return to some sort of normality, starting by using their own reusable cups for takeaway pints.
Ours To Save, a climate news organisation, and Eco Disco, a sustainable nightlife initiative, are behind #PlasticFreePints. They both liken the campaign to the largely successful reusable coffee cup initiative which has cut the sales of wasteful materials used to serve hot beverages. They suggest customers bring their own “pint glass, milk bottle, pickle jar” instead of using a plastic throwaway cup.
Is that loud and clear? You’ll catch us at the front of the socially-distant queue with our refillable milk bottles waiting eagerly for our pints.
