With temperatures finally beginning to rise (at least for now); across the city, Londoners are beginning to emerge from their winter hibernation on the search of some well-needed fresh air and sunshine. And we’ve found spot that offers both of those things, and then some… Less than hour away from the capital; there’s a crystal clear lake is so blue and sparkly, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported straight to somewhere in the Mediterranean. Where you actually are, however, is in Halling in Kent. And more specifically: St Andrews Lakes. Yes, you read that correctly. This breathtaking, blue lake is just a mere motorway journey from London.
A previous quarry for chalk mining, St Andrews Lakes has been transformed into a stunning lake reserve, complete with 70 acres of bright blue water, sandy beaches, a huge range of water and land-based activities, Kent’s largest inflatable aquapark, and a brand new zip line. Not bad, hey?

At 30 metres deep, the lakes are perfect for diving, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and having an all-round splashing time. Have a go at some watersports, rent a pedalo for a relaxing float on the water, partake in some beach yoga, or even spend some time at the spa. It’s – quite literally – whatever floats your boat.
There’s a cafe for some well-deserved post-activity refueling and rehydrating, and when you inevitably don’t want to leave and go back to reality; there’s some on-site lodges to stay in. From February 15, you’ll be able to take your visit to entirely new heights, as a big old zipwire is setting up shop at the lakes. Promising to be an exhilarating experience; you’ll have the chance to soar across the breathtaking waters and feast your eyes on some of the my gorgeous views in the country.
Consider my next staycation well and truly planned.
