Fans of Charlie Mackesy will want to make an immediate beeline for Sotheby’s, where the illustrator and writer’s work is on display throughout the Christmas period. From December 16 to January 13, a new selling exhibition of Mackesy’s works is on view (and for sale!), capturing the world of his award-winning book ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’. Accompanying the exhibition, the Sotheby’s Story Café has undergone a stunning transformation thanks to Mackesy’s hand-painted floor-to-ceiling murals.
The exhibition, titled Look How Far We’ve Come, displays over 60 original works from Charlie Mackesy. They capture the magic of his book and reveal the close friendship and poignant conversations between the four characters. Accompanying them is the mural, which brings the book in life-size scale for everyone to enjoy. It also provides diners/viewers/guests an insight into how Mackesy creates his work, thanks to the sheer scale. The mural reveals the interplay of paint and ink, layered up within the work as part of his artistic process.
Said Helen Culver Smith, Sotheby’s Senior Director:
“Charlie’s works have captured the hearts of all ages, opening up conversations around love, loneliness and belonging. His designs are ultimately a celebration of the importance of friendship and kindness and we at Sotheby’s can think of no better message for the Christmas season, one that we hope visitors to the Story Café will enjoy and reflect upon too.”
Make sure you head on down to browse the works, and grab a copy of Charlie Mackesy’s book to enjoy while visiting the café. Also make sure to take advantage of the special festive menu, which ranges from mince pies to Christmas cupcakes. It’s a picture-perfect way to spend an afternoon this holiday season!
