We may be entering another warm spell in the capital, but it’s also been brought to our attention that this will, in the blink of an eye, be over soon and the upcoming festive season will be all we have.
However, some places in the city open up for festivity in that sweet overlap of time that we currently sit in, and since there are less than 100 days until the big occasion, Selfridges have gone right ahead to open up their Christmas shop.
The Selfridges Christmas Shop
Waltzing into the lower ground floor of Selfridges on Oxford Street, the Christmas shop arrived at the sensible hour of September 16 (though they’ve been known to open as early as July before!), bringing with it an opportunity to get ahead with the Christmas shopping before the crowds of people wandering in from looking at the Christmas lights start to appear.
This year, they’ve gone all out to bring the cheer with a candy-adorned tree and a characteristically lavish set of baubles hanging from the ceilings in close proximity to the shoppers pottering around for their Selfridges festive bits ‘n’ bobs. A peek inside will see you greeted with toy trains, cuckoo clocks, and a model village in a space that is more Disney Wonderland than a regular old department store.
Much like their counterparts at Liberty, who are the other top dogs at the early Christmas shopping game, this space is a corner of London filled to the brim with make-your-own gifts from the personalisation grotto, wrapping paper, tree decór, advent calendars, and all you could ever wish for come December. At Selfridges, there are over 900 different decorations, with over 60% of items being completely exclusive to the shop.
Just as in previous year, Selfridges have also chosen a set of themes for their customised decorations, which are: Bar’s Open, including the popular plays on food brands Torres (‘Porres’ ) Crisps and Perelló (‘Noello’) olivies and an espresso martini; What’s Trending, which range from ‘Swiftie’ numbers to a spicy margs; Young At Heart, which shows of Hello Kitty and Care Bears; and Stars In Your Eyes, which boasts a disco cowboy hat and a smooth sax. All are ready to go right onto your tree!
Christmas will creep up on you, and a trip to the tinsel-kissed walls of Selfridges will truly have you in a festive headlock.
