It’s always worth putting aside time during your trip to London to check out a record store. And when ambling through Brick Lane, Notting Hill, or Soho, it’s often wise to poke your head into Rough Trade to pick up anything from a new release to a photo booth shoot.
Now, when you visit the Barbican, for a wander or a read in their library, you’ll also be able to poke your head into the world of Rough Trade, with the shop opening a pop-up at the city’s brutalist beacon. You’ll find Rough Trade’s latest venture at a curated area of the Barbican Shop.
On top of their collection that spans emerging independent artists and some of the most influential musicians from the capital, the Rough Trade pop-up will also feature records by those who perform headline shows at the Barbican – running from the past through to today!
It’s not the first time the Barbican and Rough Trade have crossed paths, either. The beloved record store hosted their 40th birthday celebrations at the venue, with performances from the likes of The Pop Group, Green Gartside (Scritti Politti), Protomartyr, and more. It’s viewed by the two parties as an excellent meeting of minds, with Rough Trade’s birth during the 1970s punk scene coinciding with the construction of the Barbican; and both spots sharing a vision to champion the music scene in the capital.
Speaking about the news, Jo Davis, Head of Retail at the Barbican, says: “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Rough Trade, a true icon in the music world.
“Our audiences will be able to shop a collection curated by Rough Trade, representing some of London’s finest artists as well as featuring records from musicians who have graced our stage. From groundbreaking contemporary artists to legendary performers, the selection highlights the diverse and rich musical heritage that is a hallmark of the Barbican’s music programme.”
