If you were going to create an enormous ‘Art Attack’-style mural of a national treasure, what materials would you use? Would you use specially-made art supplies? Or would you turn your creativity to found objects to create the larger-than-life artwork? What about… pumpkins? Because a farm just a few hours away from London has done exactly that: they’ve made an enormous pumpkin mural of Sir David Attenborough.
Last week, Sunnyfields Farm joined forces with Béga Design Co. to create a seriously gourd tribute to the TV legend. The subject of the mural was down to the public, with a vote determining that it would represent the famed nature lover. And following its creation, Sunnyfields Farm was able to confirm that the mural broke a Guinness World Record. (Amusingly, it was their very own record that they broke!)
The pumpkin mural of Sir David Attenborough
The pumpkin mural was created using over 10,000 pumpkins and squashes. The brilliant display handily coincided with the year of Attenborough’s 100th birthday. And while the mural made use of a whopping number of pumpkins, that wasn’t the source of the record.
Instead of breaking the record for most pumpkins used to create a single piece of art (which I assume is a real thing…), the pumpkin mural broke a record for its sheer size. Specifically, they broke the record for the largest mosaic created from squashes.
The Attenborough piece measures a whopping 218.19 square metres. This easily beat the farm’s previous mural record, when they created a 212 sq m mural of Ozzy Osbourne last year.
You can see how they created the mural in the video below:
The new record was confirmed by a Guinness World Records adjudicator at the unveiling of the mural.
The farm creates a unique pumpkin artwork each year to kick off its Pumpkin Time event. They’ve been building the enormous displays for the past 10 years.
