London isn’t short of nice slices, and Unlock is fairly new to the city’s pizza scene. Popping up in east London earlier this year, with Naples-born siblings Arianna and Giovanni Izzo at the helm, this stylish Hackney spot is already mixing up the menu with the launch of what they claim to be the world’s first pizza taco.
They’re calling this new dish ‘Luna’, after its half moon shape, though I’d argue ‘pizza taco’ would probably have done the job. It’s a marriage of two iconic street food dishes: the Neapolitan pizza fritta and, of course, the Mexican taco. And, you know what? I’m very much here for this fusion of cuisines. Crispy fried pizza dough with that authentic Italian flavour, all in the snackable shape of a taco? What’s not to love?
The tacos come in various flavours, offering both traditional options as well as a few wild cards. For example, funghi lovers will go mad for the Porcino with porcini, shiitake mushrooms, crispy guanciale, leek and taleggio cream, while the Genovese offers delicious mouthfuls of slow-cooked silverside beef, stewed onion, crispy onion, pecorino sauce and chives. Or, if you’re after something a little different, opt for something like the Spicy Mango with mango, green cabbage, avocado, feta and a sweetcorn sauce.
Giovanni Izzo, the founder of Unlock, explains: “Luna is more than just a new dish—it’s a revolution in street food. We’ve taken the heart of traditional Neapolitan flavours and married them with the boldness of gourmet ingredients to create something that’s never been done before. We believe it will challenge the boundaries of flavour while still delivering the soul-warming comfort food experience.”
