If you’re heading out and about this weekend, there’s one major disruption to the London Underground that you should probably factor into your plans. This weekend, 17-18 January, the entire Picadilly Line will not be operating due to track work happening across the line. Transport for London (TfL) is advising passengers to plan ahead and check before they travel, using alternative tube services and buses to get around. The Piccadilly Line’s Friday night tube services will also be impacted.
We have also put together this handy guide so you can see the full list of all tube disruptions across the capital this weekend.
Why will the Piccadilly Line be closed?
The closure is taking place as part of a wider project to upgrade the Piccadilly Line, which includes getting the line ready for new trains. In order to prepare the line, there will be continued part-closures on a number of weekends, with the next closure on 20-22 March from Cockfosters to Uxbridge.
You can find out the full list of upcoming closures on the TfL website.
How to get to Heathrow Airport
We all know the Piccadilly Line is one of the routes serving Heathrow Airport, but anyone getting some winter sun and heading to the airport this weekend can still choose from several other public transport routes to get there:
- Elizabeth Line: All four Heathrow terminals can be reached via this line, with several trains per hour serving each terminal on weekends. The “Lizzie Line” is connected to major rail stations such as Paddington, Liverpool Street and Farringdon.
- Heathrow Express: If you’re travelling from central London, one of the quickest way to reach Heathrow is using this service from Paddington. Trains leave every 15 minutes.
- Bus: There are, of course, many local bus routes that allow you to get to Heathrow. You can find a full list of bus routes on the official Heathrow site.
- Coach: National Express and First Bus run coaches into Heathrow from a number of central London locations.
