Aurora Borealis. At this time of year? In this part of the country? Localised entirely in your kitchen capital city? Yes. May I see it? No Yes.
You might have noticed that London witnessed a pretty historic and seismic event over the weekend. The Northern Lights swanned into the UK for what was, quite literally, the perfect storm. Skies were clear, the particles were visible, and people around the capital and much of the country were wowed in what could be a once-in-a-lifetime sight for many.
We caught the best glimpse of the aurora borealis on Friday night (May 10), and in areas with little light pollution, it really shined more than we could have hoped… based on past Northern Lights rumours around these parts, anyway.
Missed it? You’ll be feeling like the second image on our Instagram carousel right about now, but you can still check out some of the best shots below.
Northern Lights in London
Battersea Power Station is truly getting in on the action…
Did you have a nice flight?
Simply stunning, London. We may never get a view quite like this of the city.
Of course, the sight of the Northern Lights was also enjoyed across the world, with New York City also catching an unlikely slice of the action. Usually, you’d expect to never catch the Aurora Borealis as far south as it was on Friday night, but the conditions allowed us the pleasure this time. Adding that to the beautifully toasty conditions we enjoyed, it’s safe to say we had a pretty ‘above average’ weekend when all was said and done in the capital.
