Well, they don’t call Model Market “The European Capital of Vibes” for no reason…
At least, I presume there’s some reason behind it? Anyway, however the origins of the phrase, The European Capital of Vibes is indeed open once more for South London foodies, and we’re extremely keen to see what’s on offer. The southernmost of Street Feast’s food market empire (which, sadly, lost Dinerama to rising rents last year), Model Market is found in Lewisham, where it happily caters to the needs of 400 foodies across the weekend. Model Market has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic, so it’s a very welcome sight to have this street food paradise back up and running. Amongst the lip-smackingly good food you can snaffle on a visit here are the gigantic burgers of One Tonne Burger Co, cult slices from Fundi Pizza, tantalising tacos from Dos Mas Tacos, and curry fried chicken from Raastawala. Yep, curry fried chicken – also know as our new must-hunt-down snack.
Dessert is taken care of by Secret Nicky’s (no relation), who whip up incredible Frozen Custard Sundaes and Billionaire Brownies to satisfy your sweet tooth. The five food traders will be in residence until May 17, when Model Market are promising to add more delicious options to the roster. However, I reckon the most exciting guest this summer is already in place; the High Line Tequila Bar, which perches above the market and serves up plenty of tequila for those sun-soaked Lewisham evenings.
Though Model Market is a former 1950s market in design, Street Feast have taken some artistic liberty in turning it into a tropical paradise, complete with palm trees and beach views. They’re open from Thursday to Saturday, and whilst table bookings have flown out the door at an alarming rate, Model Market are holding plenty back for walk-ins (let the disorganised amongst us rejoice!). Oh, and once you’re in, they promise “no limit on table time, delicious nachos or general craic” – basically, everything we need right now!
