If you’ve visited Lewisham at all in the past five years, you’ve no doubt spotted the colourful padlocked doorways that guard the entrance to a mysterious area just outside the shopping centre. These doors hide what was once a flourishing market in the area, the Model Market, with a wealth of food traders, bars, and market stands. Perhaps you’ve even spotted the retro-tinged sign that once ushered guests in. Peer past the peeling paint now, though, and you’ll spot hollowed-out stands, trash, and rubble.
The market sadly shut down back in 2021, but after five years away, it’s time for a return. That’s right, folks, under new management, Lewisham’s Model Market is returning – and they’re expecting to be open this summer! Construction is currently underway as they bring the venue back to life.

Model Market and German Kraft
The market’s much-anticipated return comes courtesy of another London market legend, the folks over at German Kraft Brewery. Having kicked off their career at Elephant & Castle’s Mercato Metropolitano, they’ve gone on to open craft beer bars and taprooms around London and the world. These include another Mercato in Mayfair, as well as locations in Vienna, Austria, and Berlin.
At the new Model Market, guests can expect plenty of sudsy pints from German Kraft, alongside a curated roster of street food traders. The space will be home to everything from “morning coffee and coworking to micro-dining, creative retail, [and] evening programming”.
Paul Redden, Centre Director at Lewisham Shopping Centre, said:
“We’re incredibly excited to be partnering with German Kraft to bring the new Model Market to Lewisham. German Kraft’s proven track record operating vibrant, successful venues means they know how to create an environment that’s welcoming, energetic, and full of character. We can’t wait to see it all come to life when the Model Market officially opens.”

Lewisham Model Market is expected to reopen in the late summer of 2026.
