Greenwich’s Painted Hall is no stranger to a model in the celestial form, having welcomed in Luke Jerram’s Museum Of The Moon and Gaia – the floating wonder of planet Earth. Later this year, the artist is making it a hat-trick of planets at the same venue, with his stunning Mars creation landing in the Old Royal Naval College.
It marks the second time Jerram’s artwork of the red planet has been shown in London, following its appearance at All Saints’ Church last summer. Mars: War and Peace hits the awe-inspiring Painted Hall on November 24, and runs into 2025 with plenty of Mars-themed late-night events, talks, and workshops set to take place. Check out the video below showing our visit of the model last time it was in town!
The model is seven metres in diameter, and its surface is made up of imagery from NASA of the real planet. Though it’s around a million times smaller than the real thing, it’ll give viewers a chance to see what it might be like to view it up close in space through its unique composition. Head down to enjoy it alongside the accompanying sounds from BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones and be completely immersed in Jerram’s artwork.
Speaking on the installation, Mars Luke Jerram said: “Mars follows on from my other astronomical artworks Museum of the Moon and Gaia presented in the awe-inspiring Painted Hall and allows a close encounter with the Martian planet. I hope that visitors will feel transported to its inhospitable desert wasteland and, in comparison, really value our life on Earth.”
Luke Jerram’s ‘Mars: War and Peace’ will land at the Old Royal Naval College on November 24, 2024, and remain until January 28, 2025. Find it at Old Royal Naval College, King William Walk, Greenwich, SE10 9NN (the nearest station is Cutty Sark, DLR).
