Marble Arch got a makeover this week.
London is one proud city, isn’t it? First came Greenwich’s road crossings, then came the Tube roundels, and now Marble Arch has had a rainbow glow-up in honour of Pride in London 2019. For one night only, the iconic landmark was illuminated with the colours of the Pride flag, and we think it looks pretty darn fetching.
2019 is the first year Marble Arch has been illuminated by the rainbow, but the spot has a long history with protest and the struggle for human rights. During the women’s suffrage movement, protesters would congregate at the arch before marching on Parliament – and whilst the landmark isn’t on the Pride parade route, it’s an encouraging sign to see it illuminated.
I suppose the only downside is that the illuminations only lasted for one night, but then again, rainbows are, by their very nature, rather fleeting. Hopefully it’ll return for next year!
