Celebrations for the Lunar New Year in London are the biggest in the world outside of Asia, with people usually flocking to the capital from all over the UK (and around the world, for that matter). Celebrations are back with a bang this year for the ‘Year of the Snake’, which is rung in on Wednesday, January 29. Symbolising transformation, renewal, and spiritual growth; snakes are renowned for shedding their skin, which signifies the process of letting go of the old and embracing the new. So, let’s hope that 2025 will bring us plenty of lovely new things to clutch on to, hey?
Here’s our roundup of some of the best things to do in London to celebrate this Lunar New Year. And yes – it does involve an outrageous amount of eating and drinking. After all, that is the Secret London way…
1. Ring in the Lunar New Year with the annual parade
London’s Chinatown well and truly comes alive, playing host to an annual Chinese Lunar New Year parade that’s not to be missed. Starting on Duncannon Street, the festivities make their way up Charing Cross Road and past Leicester Square Station, before heading onto Shaftesbury Avenue where the parade ends. Over 50 teams partake in the parade, filling the streets with floats, vibrant costumes, incredible performances, lion dancing, and of course – food. This year’s exact parade plans are yet to be revealed but keep your eyes peeled here to find out more.
2. Feast like a king at the House of Ming
If there’s one Cantonese restaurant you must dine at in London, in our senior writer Tamsin’s opinion, it has to be House of Ming – and what better time than Lunar New Year? Based a short walk from Victoria Station, this fine dining spot serves up exquisite food with exquisite service to match. For the Lunar New Year, they have a special menu of dishes, from dim sum to desserts: Tamsin’s favourites were the scallop dim sum with golden garlic, soft shell crab with mango, and the crispy fried pork lion. The presentation of the drinks was exquisite too.
Year-round, House of Ming offers a well-priced £35 lunch deal (all served within a swift 45 minutes), plus a la carte and set menu options. The latter costs £80pp, but you get your money’s worth with the amount and quality of the food, and the exceptional service. What’s more, the chefs seek to ensure all dietary requirements are well catered for; the menu is laden with vegetarian options, and dishes can be easily amended.
