Veggie Prets were a result of a successful trial back in 2016, but it seems London’s last remaining dedicated vegetarian stores will be reverting back to their original, meat-serving ways. The sites, which you’ll find on Broadwick Street in Soho and Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch, will start serving meat again from February 19.
The original trial, which began in Soho, started a bit of a revolution: with Pret A Manger eventually opening 10 exclusively veggie stores across the country (though almost all in London). It was intended to be a limited run of just one month, but proved so popular that it became a permanent thing… well, at least until now.
Pret started rolling back the Veggie Pret Revolution back in 2022, when four stores were closed and another started serving meat again. According to The Standard, Pret have argued that it no longer needs these dedicated veggie stores as so much of its range—even in standard stores—is vegetarian and vegan. They quote Katherine Bagshawe, UK food & coffee director at Pret A Manger, who said: “One in three of all our main meals sales are veggie or vegan-friendly.”
Pret’s vegetarian and vegan options include their signature VLT Sandwich, a brand new Sticky Mushroom Bánh Mì Baguette, a Butternut Masala Soup, and a Meatless Meatball Marinara Hot Roll.
