Let’s not beat around the bush: London is a f**king expensive place to live. Pints, travel and food might make you scared to check your bank account, and please do not get us started on the renting playground in this city.
Not quite everything costs a pretty penny, though, and you can tick off many of London’s cultural checkpoints without spending anything to get in — think the Science Museum, Tate Modern, Natural History Museum and many more. All brilliant spots in one of the culture capitals of the world, and all free to visit.
In fact, London has just been named as the best city in the world for free tourist attractions in a new study, with 1,389 different attractions – with an average rating of 4.41/5 – that can be enjoyed in the best way: gratis!
The study was carried out by luggage storage experts Radical Storage, who took the data from 22.9 million TripAdvisor reviews across 146,000 tourist attractions worldwide to crown London as the top dogs for free attractions on the planet, seeing off other big hitters including New York City (2nd) and Paris (3rd).
London did, however, just lose out to the Big Apple when it came to finding the best city for tourist attractions full stop, coming in 2nd place, just ahead of Tokyo (3rd) and Rome (4th). New Orleans also pipped us to the post in the hunt for the best city to visit museums and galleries.
What is London’s highest-rated free tourist attraction, you ask? That would be the British Museum, with an average score of 4.5/5 from more than 73,000 reviews.
