A big claim here – Kanishka by Atul Kochhar might just be the best Indian restaurant in the big smoke! Here’s why…
The Venue
This absolutely fantastic restaurant is helmed by none other than Atul Kochaar – the two-time Michelin-starred chef who has been at the forefront of the Indian culinary scene in the capital for well over 25 years now. The concept behind the restaurant is to celebrate a whole smörgåsbord of different flavours and cooking styles from all over the Indian subcontinent – using the freshest, local ingredients of course.
The eatery itself is tucked just off the main thoroughfare of Regents Street, and it’s an atmospheric spot Maître d’ by some absolutely fantastic staff who gave us a very warm welcome upon arrival. With clean and sleek decor and some beautiful artwork lining the walls, it’s a lovely spot to while away the hours eating some of the best Indian food you’ll find within the capital.
The Food
Speaking of the food, it really is the star of the show here. We were lucky enough to try their Diwali tasting menu which offered dishes such as ‘Khasta Mug’ – a chicken tikka pie with cumin mix berry chutney – and ‘Changezi Champen’ – a fennel and star anise marinated Romney’s lamb cutlet with kohlrabi, cavolo nero and jus.
Other standouts which were lovingly crafted by the team included the coconut-marinated stone bass with Devon crab croquet and the ‘Mithai Platter’ dessert – a heavenly concoction of rasmalai with saffron poached pear, dark chocolate mousse and almond fudge. All ten courses of the tasting menu were pretty out-of-this-world it has to be said, and I’d rush back for their regular menu too – which includes rosemary seekh kebabs and turkey malai tikka too.
The Drinks
As if the food wasn’t enough, Kanishka has also got an extensive wine list, some fantastic cocktails – the ‘Kanishka Spritz’ concoction of rhubarb gin, strawberry purée, lime juice, soda and prosseco was probably my favourite – as well as whisky pairings too. What’s not to love?!
The Conclusion
I’d highly recommend paying this chic, tucked-away spot a visit if you’re ever in the centre of town. The food was out of this world, and add in the lovely staff and an extensive wine list and you’re onto a real winner here! Get yourself to Mayfair stat.
