A scientific study (yes, Actual Science) has found that intelligent people are more likely to swear.
Too f*cking right.
The research, conducted by psychologists Kristin L. Jay and Timothy B. Jay for the Language Sciences journal, found that people who swear a lot might actually have a larger vocabulary than their polite counterparts.
Of course this goes against the age-old belief that swearing is a sign that you’re unable to express yourself in other ways. But you can consider the myth debunked!
Participants were asked to take part in a short word test. Those who recorded the most swear words in a minute were typically also the people with higher IQ scores.
Basically, the more swear words you know, the better your verbal fluency and general command of the English language.
Jay and Jay write, “A voluminous taboo lexicon may better be considered an indicator of healthy verbal abilities rather than a cover for their deficiencies.”
The study also revealed that people with pottier mouths also had more significant traits of neuroticism, which suggests that these people are more easily agitated and may often find themselves in negative or emotional states. Jay and Jay suggest that using pejoratives is likely to be a way of releasing tension and stress.
To conclude, if you swear a lot, you’re probably an emotional wreck – but you’re also super f*cking smart. 🤷♀️
