Whether you’re the type to put your Christmas tree up the moment November rolls around, or you’re firmly in the no-festivities-until-December camp, one thing’s certain: if you’re hoping to visit one of Europe’s most magical Christmas markets this year, you’ll need to get planning.
London has some lovely festive markets of its own, of course, but thanks to a brand new route from London City Airport, hopping over to a traditional European one just got even easier.
Where is the route to?
From December 1, British Airways will be flying direct from East London’s City Airport to Innsbruck, Austria — a city famous for its snow-dusted Old Town and beloved Christmas market. The flight takes just two hours, making it the perfect option for a long weekend getaway (and a handy excuse to escape any uncomfortable Christmas family interactions).
London City Airport, easily connected to the rest of the capital via the DLR, is also adding flights to Geneva, Switzerland and Chambéry, France, both ideal winter destinations for keen skiers.
What to expect from Innsbruck
Nothing gets you in the festive mood quite like strolling through Innsbruck’s Old Town Christmas Market, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Alps. Stalls are nestled between medieval buildings and the famous Golden Roof, where 2,738 gilded copper tiles sparkle above the square.
You’ll find everything from handmade trinkets and Christmas decorations to steaming mugs of glühwein, with traditional Austrian brass bands providing the soundtrack. This year, the market runs from November 15 to December 23.
And if you’ve still got festive energy to spare, make a stop at Kiebachgasse. In December, this little street is transformed into a fairy-tale lane, with characters from famous stories peeking out from every corner.
With twinkling lights, alpine backdrops, and a dash of festive magic, Innsbruck is the perfect place for a truly unforgettable winter escape.
