The big Covent Garden Cool Down will take over the piazza in late August, with over 40 flavours of ice cream to try.
Covent Garden has become something of a haven for food fans recently, what with rosé festivals, NSFW waffles, and now a mighty cool ice cream festival, soon to arrive in the piazza. From August 20-30, the Covent Garden Cool Down will offer visitors a chance to beat the heat with a scoop of frozen deliciousness, or perhaps a frozen cocktail. Let’s dive right into this marvellous ice cream festival, shall we?
It’s the third year that the Covent Garden Cool Down will take place, and things are looking rosy when scanning our eyes down the lineup of participants. Nearby shops and restaurants will be taking part, each putting a unique spin on the ‘ice cream’ brief. For example, Avobar will be serving up limited edition avocado and coconut soft-serve, while Ladurée sells iced macarons, and new bar Mrs Riot opts for sorbet prosecco cocktails.
35 vendors are slated to take part, including a handful who aren’t normally residents of Covent Garden. For instance, Crosstown Doughnuts are popping up for the Cool Down, serving ice cream sundaes with fresh-baked biscotti and cookies, whilst Barafat Café will bring delectable ice cream macarons. Bears Ice Cream will bring inventive flavours such as basil, blueberry lavender, and a vegan hibiscus sorbet, whilst Kelly’s Ice Cream Van goes straight to traditional British flavours like Pimms, and strawberries & cream.
Most excitingly, the Little Orange Van will also be in residence, serving frozen Aperol Spritz cocktails and Spritz lollies – in other words, summer in ice cream form! Equally exciting libations come courtesy of tea emporium Mariage Freres, who are whipping up frozen Tokyo Mojitos with green tea, mint, and yuzu, and surrounding restaurants including Aubaine, SUSHISAMBA, Ave Mario, and Cinnamon Bazaar will serve their own ice cream-inspired creations for the festival’s duration.
It’s far from the only exciting development for Covent Garden this month – a Disney pop-up and Harry Potter photo exhibition have already arrived, with a sparkling new neon display to follow – but’s easily the most delicious. Here’s to scoffing all the ice cream, sorbets, gelato, and frozen cocktails you can handle, sans brain freeze!
The Covent Garden Cool Down takes place around the piazza and surrounding streets from August 20 to 30. More info here.
