Calling all seasoned sailors and lazy landlubbers alike, the Horrible Histories boat tour of the ‘Terrible Thames’ is here to take you on a thrilling voyage through time along the murky waters of our greatest river.
The Horrible Histories team took some time off from their usual voyages, cruising along the Thames, but they returned earlier this month to treat us to their fourth year of immersive theatrical boat tours that cover the history of the river – with the gory bits left in, in true Horrible Histories fashion. And thanks to the return of the sun and the warmer weather, they’ll be entertaining us with historical titbits all through the coming months.
Onboard the Horrible Histories boat tour
Tours kick off from Tower Bridge Quay, and run through a riveting 45-minute round-trip cruise packed with the history of the Tower of London, Cleopatra’s Needle, and Execution Dock. Along the way, you’ll also hear the tales of historical characters ranging from King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn, Julius Caesar, Queen Boudicca, and Jack the Ripper.
The tour (and the show) sees actors thrilling their captors audience with a side-splitting live show. However, if you’re a fan of the Horrible Histories stage shows, it does look a bit different. The actors won’t be changing into historical costumes. After all, they don’t really have the time or space for it during the fast-paced journey. (Plus, there’s the whole ‘stuck on a boat’ situation…)
Since its debut in 2021, the seafaring experience has welcomed over a quarter of a million explorers aboard one of the most uniquely spirited ways to explore the history of the River Thames.
Much like the Horrible Histories book series and hit TV show, the boat tour is riotous fun for kids and adults alike. The tour has the same trademark fact-filled and outlandish comedic flare that the brand is known for, ensuring a hoot of a seafaring experience.
The Horrible Histories Terrible Thames boat tour runs through April and late May, as well as much of July and August. So grab your first mate, hoist the anchor and head out to the water mateys!
