Camden Council has launched an exciting, transformative project in central London, giving Holborn a major makeover with a range of improvements planned. From traffic-free streets to all-new green spaces, the ambitious project aims to provide wide-ranging benefits to the Holborn area, as well as for Londoners at large.
As for the confirmed plans, we can expect a safer, pedestrian-focused environment outside of the British Museum, new green and accessible public spaces, and more segregated cycle lanes.
Other initial ideas include a new people-focused public space on New Oxford Street, public space improvements on Theobalds Road, and a Healthy Hospital Street along Great Ormond Street creating a new space for visitors and patients to enjoy.
Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet member for a Sustainable Camden, said in a statement, “We want to transform Holborn into a place for people with attractive, healthy, accessible and safe streets for everyone, with cleaner air, more plants and trees, in new and improved spaces.”
Entitled ‘The Holborn Liveable Neighbourhood’, the project’s objective is clear in the title, with hopes to transform the area into a neighbourhood that supports healthier lifestyles, more active and sustainable travel, thriving communities, sustainable growth, as well as providing a safer, greener, cleaner and more inclusive environment for all who live and visit this central London hotspot.
The redevelopment is expected to cost around £40m and will be funded from a range of sources including TfL funding, council capital investment, as well as third-party contributions. The idea and the project’s fruition follows the resounding success of the West End Project, a £35 million scheme to deliver exciting improvements to Soho and its surrounding areas.
