Hampstead Heath’s beloved swimming ponds could soon feel a little toastier in winter.
The City of London Corporation is considering an extension to the Mixed Pond’s opening season, alongside an ambitious set of improvements that include new changing facilities, temperature sensors, and even saunas.
Currently, the Mixed Pond opens only from April to October, with winter access reserved exclusively for the Hampstead Heath Winter Swimming Club.
Hampstead Heath – year-round swimming expansion
Under the new proposals, casual swimmers could enjoy year-round access, bringing the pond in line with its counterparts – the Kenwood Ladies’ Pond and the Highgate Men’s Pond, both open through all four seasons.
According to Alderman Gregory Jones KC, chair of the Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Queen’s Park Committee, the review came in response to “the increasing popularity of open water swimming.” The activity has seen a sharp rise since the pandemic, as many Londoners discovered the mental and physical benefits of outdoor cold-water dips.
Hampstead Heath could get new ponds, saunas and a padel court

As part of a broader five-year business plan, the City of London Corporation is also exploring ways to enhance the swimmer experience across the Heath’s bathing ponds.
Building on the existing sauna at Parliament Hill Lido, open through winter until May 2026 – the plan explores adding saunas at other pond areas by the end of the 2027/28 financial year. These additions aim to cater to Londoners’ “sauna obsession,” pairing post-swim heat with cold plunges for recovery. Additional tech like online-viewable temperature sensors and water aeration systems will ensure safe conditions.
The plan outlines over 70 actions across 10 priorities, including up to 11 new wildlife ponds for flood mitigation, sheep grazing for conservation in 2026, and padel or pickleball courts by 2031.
Restoration of the at-risk Hill Garden Pergola and habitat preservation balance visitor growth with nature. The draft heads to the Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee soon, with approval eyed for early February.
Timelines for Hampstead Heath’s expansion
The proposals are set to be discussed by the Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee next week, with formal approval expected in early February. If approved, Hampstead Heath could soon join the ranks of iconic European outdoor swimming destinations known for blending natural waters with wellness amenities.
For many Londoners, the combination of year-round open water and on-site saunas could transform the Heath into both a swimming haven and a winter retreat cementing its status as one of the capital’s most beloved outdoor escapes.
