If you’re in the market for a gorgeous gaff with a sparklingly star-studded history, please allow us to point you in the rather dreamy direction of Portobello Road. Because that, my friends, is where you’ll find a three-bedroom home up for sale that’s, quite possibly, had more celebrities saunter through its doorway than I’ve had hot dinners.
The history of the property
The Notting Hill house was snapped up by Gillian Anderson in the early noughties following her rapid rise to fame. She bought the property for £1.4 million in 2002 and sold it for £1.5 million just 18 months later. In that time, she’d well-and-truly managed to make the place her own, though, having created a basement flat for her mum and created a Moroccan-inspired ‘chill-out’ room.
The house was later given a contemporary glow-up by Swedish interior designer, Carolin Lasberg. And in 2021, it became the home of a residential recording studio called JBJ, and has since seen the likes of Stormzy, Olivia Rodrigo, Charlie XCX, and Sabrina Carpenter record their music inside. Not bad, hey?
Inside the property
Listed with the property-pros at Strutt & Parker, the 3,500 square-foot pad boasts three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a gym, media room, and roof terrace. The humongous windows mean that the property is drenched in natural light, and the parquet flooring, exposed brickwork, and unique multi-coloured spiral staircase are all pretty good-looking, too.
It’s a space that seamlessly blends period charm with contemporary style. But as far as I’m concerned, the property’s largest selling point comes in the form of the metal slide that connects the master bedroom with the living room. It turns out that the home of my childhood dreams really does exist, after all.
I’m sure you can imagine, a piece of real estate as ravishing as this one doesn’t come particularly cheap. If you’d like to snap the property up for yourself, it will set you back a mildly eye-watering £4.5 million. But the slide alone makes it worth it, in my humble opinion.
