London is filled with bikes that you can just… hop on and ride whenever you want, sorting you at ease for arriving at your destination in time. While
But throughout June, TfL is offering Londoners the chance to enjoy unlimited 30-minute rides on Santander bikes for free as part of the launch for TfL Cycle Sundays. That means you’ll be able to pedal over to your barbecue on London Fields, your Aperol date at the pub, or your dip in Tooting Lido all completely gratis on Sundays throughout the month.
The new initiative hopes to encourage more Londoners to check out the capital city on a bike, and will be supported by a new 1,400-strong fleet of e-bikes being added to the streets. It also comes after e-bike usage in the city has skyrocketed, with the sustainable and simple modes of transport having just surpassed one million hires.
To claim your free rides every Sunday in June, you’ll need to download the Santander Cycles app or head over to a docking station with the bikes and enter the not-so-secret password (CYCLESUNDAYS). E-bikes will then be available for app users at £1 for an extra half an hour, with charges then reaching £1.65 for 30 minutes on pedal bikes and £3.30 for e-bikes.
TfL Cycle Sundays comes in collaboration with some leading cycling organisations, and hopes to help beginner cyclists around the city to build their confidence on the wheels.
Speaking on the news, David Eddington, Head of Cycle Hire at TfL, said: “TfL Cycle Sundays offers a range of leisure routes across London which are perfect for beginners looking to get into cycling.
“Cycling is not only brilliant for your mental and physical health, but also a great way to explore and see more of London. We hope that enabling all Londoners to use Santander Cycles for free every Sunday will get more people out cycling, as well as giving them a chance to try out our brilliant bikes.”
