Pint at the pictures? Don’t mind if I do…
Ever had to make the decision between wild night out or movie night in on a Friday? Well now, you don’t have to. The Fellowship and Star in south London is the new name for the Bellingham-based site that comes with its own movie theatre inside. Cinema tickets are just £6.50, and would you look at that, we’ve got some right here!
‘Bellingham Film Palace’ is where you can watch all the latest movies – pint in one hand, peanuts in the other. Absolute goals.
The boozer opened its door again in June following a £4m restoration, but the site had an exciting life even before this huge investment.
First built in the 1920s on the “Homes for Heroes” estate—which housed returning WWI veterans and their families—the (then) Fellowship Inn became everyone’s go-to, with two bars, a 200-seat music hall, a large function room and an off-license bottle shop.
The pub has also housed heroes of other kinds, with one of Britain’s best boxers training there in the sixties. British champion Sir Henry Cooper famously lived in the pub to train for his first fight against the one and only Muhammad Ali, one of only four fights in which Ali was knocked down.
This Grade II-listed building shows a range of independent and blockbuster movies. A cafe and live music stage have also been added, and with past performances from the likes of Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in the 60s, who knows who could end up behind the mic! The new refurb has already seen DJ sets from Happy Mondays’ Bez and This Is England actor Thomas Turgoose.
On top of all this, they’ve started an open mic night, and a pub quiz. So even if films aren’t your thing – there’s something for everyone at The Fellowship and Star.
