We’re all used to seeing Ewan McGregor’s face on our TV screens, but it’s been a while since any of us caught sight of him at the theatre. That’s about to change in 2025, with the beloved Scottish actor heading back to the stage for his first role in 17 years, which will see him perform at the West End in April.
In his first appearance since The Real Thing on Broadway with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ewan McGregor will be starring in My Master Builder between April and July 2025.
My Master Builder takes inspiration from Henrik Ibsen’s 1892 outing The Master Builder, and is created by US playwright Lila Raicek with Michael Grandage – who has worked with McGregor on Guys and Dolls and Othello – at the helm for directing duties. McGregor will portray architect Henry Solness, who has a party thrown for him by his wife before one of his former students turns up unannounced.
Speaking on the news, Ewan McGregor said: “It’s such a thrill to be returning to the stage – and to work with Michael again, an actor’s director with whom I have had some of my happiest working experiences. He’s a generous collaborator, who enables you to discover the play together afresh in the rehearsal room. And what a play – I love where Lila has taken the story, a very modern take on today’s sexual politics.”
It comes soon after the actor received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making him the 2,789th to receive the honour when it was presented in September. He is most regarded for films including Trainspotting (1996) and Moulin Rouge (2001), but has also appeared in acclaimed stage productions including his role of Sky Masterson in a 2005 work of Guys And Dolls.
Ewan McGregor will star in ‘My Master Builder’, which starts previews on April 17 and runs until July 12, 2025 at the Wyndham’s Theatre, Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0DA (nearest station is Covent Garden).
