If you were celebrating a milestone birthday, how would you celebrate? With a special trip? A fancy dinner? Perhaps a beer crawl around some of the city’s best pubs and breweries? Well, that’s all well and good – but the Zoological Society of London has an even better idea. The conservation charity is celebrating its 200th birthday with a zoo-normous Easter Egg trail around the popular Whipsnade Zoo.
Taking over the zoo from March 28 – April 12 (how’s that for a long birthday celebration), the UK’s largest zoo is inviting visitors to find six enormous Easter Eggs hidden around its 600-acre site. But there’s a twist – as well as eggs to be found, there’s a secret code to be cracked. Find all the eggs, and you’ll find all the clues. And if you solve the puzzle, you’ll reveal a top-secret message that will earn you a tasty treat at the end.
An Easter Egg hunt around Whipsnade Zoo
The Easter Egg hunt draws inspiration from some of the puzzles and enrichment activities that the zoo animals themselves enjoy. The inhabitants of Whipsnade Zoo “often put their cognitive abilities to the test with puzzle feeders to unlock their favourite snacks”. And just like them, you’ll be solving clues to earn yourself a tasty treat!
As you explore the 600-acre zoo, you’ll encounter the 11,000 animals that call the conservation zoo home. Among them are “Asian elephants, 10 southern white rhinos including three-month-old calf Mick, and a herd of reticulated giraffes”.

There’s no need to purchase a separate ticket for the trail, either, as the Easter Egg hunt is included in the price of a regular zoo ticket.
