Following the news of Le Gavrouche’s closure, chef Michel Roux Jr has announced his next venture: a brand new restaurant at the Langham in London.
Named Chez Roux, the restaurant is due to open up on May 22, replacing the temporary restaurant Good Front Room run by Dom Taylor in Palm Court.
Chez Roux at The Langham
Michel Roux’s upcoming restaurant touches on very personal notes for the chef. Chez Roux takes inspiration from his childhood memories, drawing from his life in rural Kent being raised at the Fairlawne estate, which is where his father Albert Roux OBE worked as a private chef.
Speaking on the launch in a press release, Michel Roux commented: “I have such fond memories of growing up at Fairlawne, where my father spent [seven] years cooking for the Cazalet family. From relaxed lunches to extravagant dinner parties, it’s safe to say everyone ate very well! Dad had to learn the great British classics but used all his French technique and skills to cook for the family and esteemed guests.”
But what about the food, you ask? In a menu that also nods to the very first at Le Gavrouche in 1967. diners will be treated to some beautiful dishes, including Michel Roux’s take on Welsh Rarebit with stout and Montgomery cheddar and piquant with mustard, as well as the grilled lobster with garlic butter, fries, and béarnaise, which is a dish he remembers tucking into a Le Gavroche as a child.
Speaking on the menu as a whole Michel Roux said: “The menu at Chez Roux is inspired by these early memories. Many of the recipes that were popular during the 60s have been consigned to history, yet there is so much to love about the dishes I remember from this time – British classics combined with traditional French techniques. So, with a touch of nostalgia and much excitement, I can’t wait for guests to try the menus at Chez Roux at The Langham.”
Of course, diners will also be treated to some divine hand-crafted cocktails that reflect the era, with names including the Queen’s Dubonnet and the Madeira Cobbler, as well as a treasure trove of premium wines and Champagnes.
Chez Roux opens up at Palm Court at The Langham on May 22 for dinner service. The Good Front Room by Dom Taylor will be open until April 30. Bookings at Chez Roux are available now.
