We’re all familiar with New York‘s annual Met Gala, which happens on the first Monday in May each year, and has been presided over by Vogue’s Editor-In-Chief, Anna Wintour, for many years. However, the brand-new British Museum Ball, taking place on 18 October, is set to rival the Big Apple’s most glamorous night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The British Museum director, Dr Nicholas Cullinan is spearheading the ball, with billionaire heiress Isha Ambani acting as co-chair.
Is there a theme to the British Museum Ball?
The ball takes place on the closing weekend of the museum’s current Ancient India: living traditions exhibition, which acts as inspiration for the theme of the ball, which will be pink and inspired by ‘the colours and light of India’. If this ball is anything like the Met Gala, we can expect guests to go all out on their pink ensembles, and we can all morph into armchair fashion critics.
Can I get a ticket?
There is set to be an 800-person guestlist, but before you dust off your gladrags, it’s an invite-only event and they have reportedly already been sent out. Our invite must have got lost in the post, surely. Just like the Met Gala, which attracts the likes of Rihanna, Zendaya and Lady Gaga, the London event is also set to bring in a host of celebrities, as well as having many high-profile names on its committee, from Naomi Campbell to Idris Elba.
While it’d set you back $75,000 to get a ticket to the Met Gala, the British Museum Ball tickets are said to have cost £2000, with proceeds going to the museum‘s international partnerships.
What can guests expect from the night?
There is set to be a drinks reception set against the stunning backdrop of the museum’s Great Court and guests will then be served dinner, surrounded by the art housed in the museum. Other aspects of the night include a silent auction and musical performances.
