This lush Brighton seafront lido is expected to open in time for summer 2022.
If you’ve not hopped on the train and made the short trip to Brighton for a weekend day trip, what are you doing with yourselves? Enjoying the richness of all that London has to offer? Well… fair enough I guess – but Brighton has an ace up its sleeve that simply begs you to pay a visit. A new project plans to open an open-air heated swimming pool right on Brighton beach in summer 2022, and we’re already itching for a dip.
Developers Sea Lanes Brighton gained approved from Brighton & Hove City Council in March 2021, and with construction set to begin this winter, the first mock-ups of the pool have emerged. The location isn’t a coincidence; apart from rejuvenating a run-down stretch of the beachfront, the pool will act as the National Open Water Swimming Centre, allowing swimmers to build confidence before opting for a dip in the English Channel.

Per Joe McNulty, director of Sea Lanes Brighton, the pool will be accessible to all, and “provide much needed swimming facilities in Brighton […] as well as a training hub for open water swimming events, triathlon, sea safety and lifeguard courses.” All jolly good stuff, and that’s before you factor in the 100 or so jobs the project is expected to bring to the area.
The 50-metre pool will be fully heated, inviting us to pop by for a dip even in the winter months if you don’t fancy a bit of cold water swimming. The Brighton seafront lido will also house a food court with street food outlets and an outdoor seating area (roll on summer), and business units earmarked for retail, health, and fitness. Construction will take place through the winter, so let’s hope that come next summer, we can grab our towels and pop down to the coast for a heated swim!
