You don’t have to leave the capital behind to enjoy a peaceful retirement. Thanks to excellent transport links and leafy commuter towns just outside London, the UK’s top retirement destinations are now closer than ever with some located less than 30 minutes by train or tube.
According to Legal & General’s 2025 Retirement Happiness Index, which ranked UK constituencies across six pillars including housing, health, community, finances, nature, and amenities.
The UK’s number one retirement spot is near London
Chesham and Amersham in Buckinghamshire is the best place to retire in the entire UK and it is just a single tube ride from central London.
Chesham and Amersham scored 74 out of 100 with an exceptional health score of 93 thanks to strong proportions of over-65s in good physical and mental health plus excellent GP access.
Located at the end of the Metropolitan line, this constituency offers the picturesque Chiltern Hills landscape for walking and cycling, 150 listed buildings in Amersham alone with charming historic streets, and community events like the Amersham Festival of Music and Ley Hill Music & Beer Festival.
Retirees here also benefit from London’s restaurants, theatres, museums, and galleries being just on their doorstep.

Beaconsfield scored 72 out of 100 and can be reached in just 22 minutes from Marylebone station. This elegant market town combines old-world charm with modern conveniences, making it ideal for retirees who want sophistication without isolation. The area features historic high streets, upscale shops, and easy rail access to central London.
Dorking and Horley rounded out the top three and is also less than an hour from London. The area offers easy access to the North Downs and Surrey Hills, perfect for countryside walks while staying close to the capital for cultural activities and family visits.
This area is the only London constituency to make the UK’s top 20 retirement places

Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner in northwest Outer London is the only London constituency to make the UK’s top 20 and it ranked 14th overall.
This leafy trio offers Ruislip Lido, a picturesque reservoir with waterside walks and leisure activities, and Pinner Memorial Park with tranquil gardens and open space for relaxation.
The area features excellent amenities including pharmacies, supermarkets, post offices, banks, libraries, and theatres all within reach, along with a peaceful suburban pace while staying within London’s transport network.
Average house prices over the past year were £733,053 in Pinner, £575,770 in Ruislip, and £873,301 in Northwood. While London overall struggles with housing affordability, this northwest London district offers a more balanced option with leafy streets, community focus, and strong access to both nature and urban conveniences.
Whether you want the UK’s number one retirement spot in Chesham and Amersham, the elegance of Beaconsfield, the countryside charm of Dorking and Horley, or the convenience of staying within London itself in Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner, the areas surrounding the capital offer some of Britain’s very best places to enjoy your golden years.
