Celebrating the return of Art After Dark, a free late-night arts programme featuring over 30 art galleries in the city, Art of London have taken over Leicester Square Gardens with two brilliant installations.
The first of which is a colourful, inflatable sculpture by British contemporary artist Claire Luxton. The immersive piece, called The Cornucopia, towers above the gardens at 7m tall. It’s illuminated with LED lighting in all sorts of colours, and symbolises growth, beauty, and the West End’s vibrant energy.
Also found within Leicester Square Gardens today (October 12) is a gorgeous illuminated poem created by Robert Montgomery. Titled The People You Love, this installation is a poignant piece of art illustrating love and loss.
Tomorrow (October 13), there will also be a digital display taking over Piccadilly Lights, inspired by the work of iconic performance artist Marina Abramović. The display will combine images from an installation featured in Abramović’s solo exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, along with a selection of instructional statements taken from the ‘Marina Abramović Method’. These statements are designed to teach the artist’s method for reaching a higher consciousness and confronting life’s challenges.
Art After Dark features London’s most acclaimed art galleries, all collaborating for two arty nights out in London’s West End. This evening (October 12), you can take part in the West End Gallery Hop!, the arty equivalent of a bar crawl, where you can dash between indie galleries such as Stern Pissarro Gallery, Cristea Roberts Gallery and Saatchi Yates. On Friday, October 13, visitors can explore the National Gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts and the National Portrait Gallery after dark. Art After Dark is part of a campaign to boost the arts sector. What’s more, throughout the programme, loads of London restaurants and bars will be offering special discounts for culture seekers.
