If you’ve ever spent any time on social media in the past few years, you’ve seen the wacky and wild ice cream flavours that tantalize Londoners’ tastebuds each summer. But what if you wanted the wildest, most over-the-top bizarre, ice cream flavour? Why, you’d head to the inimitable Anya Hindmarch Ice Cream Project – which has just returned to London.
Now entering its third year of serving brain-freezingly terrifying flavours, the Anya Hindmarch Ice Cream Project doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Instead, it seems like their flavours have gotten even wilder than ever before! They’re opening up shop today (June 7), with a completely new selection of flavours alongside a few old favourites that have returned. But don’t dawdle to try it out; the Ice Cream Project will only be in town until August 18.
As always – we had to head down and give it a try for ourselves:
How weird are the flavours?
If this is your first time, brace yourself. Described as a “minimalist temple to the joy of ice cream and sorbet”, the Ice Cream Project serves flavours more likely to be “found in the pantry rather than the freezer, think savoury sauces, condiments, biscuits and even olives…”
Ever been dousing your fish and chips in vinegar and thought to yourself, ‘I wish this smell was an ice cream’? Or have you ever mixed up a bowl of pesto pasta for a quick dinner and thought, ‘I should add sugar and dairy to this and freeze it’? No? Well, those are exactly the sort of flavours you can try at the Anya Hindmarch Ice Cream Project. They’ve got a Sarson’s Vinegar flavour and a Filippo Berio Pesto ice cream!
Other wacky offerings include the likes of:
- Branston Piccalilli
- Perello Olives
- Maldon Sea Salt
- Heinz Baked Beans
Among the more tame – or relatively tame – flavours are more crowd-pleasing options that feel more traditional. Or, at the very least, more in keeping with what you’d expect from a sugary, frozen treat. These include:
- Bird’s Custard
- Kenco Coffee
- McVitie’s Penguin
- Tropicana Orange Juice
- Tiptree Orange Marmalade
- McVitie’s Jaffa Cake
and plenty more!
The ice creams are all available to try at the ice cream parlour or you can purchase tubs to take home and share with your friends. Go on, buy a few of the weirdest ones so you can see how your mates react!
More than just ice cream
As if the brain-freeze-inducing flavours weren’t enough, there are even more ice-cream-themed goodies this year. They’ve got merch in the form of “branded caps [and] ice cream-inspired T-shirts” and they’re even offering a blind ice cream tasting.
If you reckon your taste buds are up to scratch you can skip the queues and settle in for a marathon blind tasting of 15 flavours. Along the way, you’ll try and guess the flavours of the scoops and sprinkles. Oh, and they’ll also have shortbread as well as a glass of lemonade or sparkling water – “to cleanse your tasting palate…”
Bookings are recommended for the blind tasting and can be made for a minimum of two people.
The Anya Hindmarch Ice Cream Project is open from June 7 until August 18. It opens from 10am-6pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 12-5pm on Sundays.
