I hate to be the bearer of bad news, folks, but the drab and dreary season seems to have officially begun. The days are getting darker, the weather is getting wetter, and before we know it, winter will be in full swing. It’s not all doom and gloom, though. The lovely lot over at the holiday rental portal, Holidu, have read our minds like a travel guide book, and uncovered the most sun-soaked cities on the continent. Because whilst London may have been revealed as the sunniest city in the UK, it doesn’t hold a candle to the sunniest cities in Europe. So, if you’re already fed up of grey and gloomy London, here are the best places to head to in the pursuit of some winter sunshine.
The holiday hotshots sifted through the cities, using the latest data from World Weather Online to calculate the average number of monthly sun hours and the average temperature between October and February. Once all numbers were crunched like a packet of Lays on a hotel balcony, they gave each city a score. And topping the charts as the best destination to escape to this winter is Los Cristianos in Tenerife.

Located in the largest Canary Island, Los Cristianos sees a whopping 284.7 hours of winter sun each month and boasts an average temperature of 20.3ºC. London, on the other hand, sees just 105.1 monthly hours of sunshine and a rather shudder-inducing average temperature of just 7.5ºC. Spain dominated the list of sunny cities, taking a whopping 49 of the 50 top spots. So, if you’re in desperate need of some vitamin D this winter, now you know where to head.
